{"id":1548,"date":"2018-09-07T11:46:09","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T09:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.hhb.eu\/?page_id=1548"},"modified":"2025-03-14T09:24:18","modified_gmt":"2025-03-14T08:24:18","slug":"machine-safety-stop-time-measurement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hhb.eu\/en\/machine-safety-stop-time-measurement\/","title":{"rendered":"Machine Safety and Stop Time Measurement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Machine Safety and Stop Time Measurement<\/h1>\n<h3>Machine safety ensures that the operator cannot reach the danger point before the machine has been stopped via the protective device.<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s2\">The European machinery directive (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maschinenrichtlinie.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU machinery directive 2006\/42\/EC<\/a>) specifies the general requirements for safety on machines in the<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> entire European Economic Area.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> The <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/DE\/ALL\/?uri=CELEX%3A32009L0104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Use of Work Equipment Directive 2009\/104\/EC <\/a><\/span><span class=\"s2\">defines<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">the minimum health and safety requirements for the use of work equipment by workers at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s2\">European standards define moreover concrete requirements for protective devices and the application of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">protective devices on machines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\"><span class=\"s2\">Protective devices such as light curtains, opt<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ical<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> access guarding systems, laser scanners and two-hand controls allows a more or less unrestricted access to the danger<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> point<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. In this case<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">it must be ensured that the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">operator<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> can<\/span><span class=\"s2\">not reach the danger point before the machine has been sto<\/span><span class=\"s2\">pped via the protective device.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">This is <\/span><span class=\"s2\">done<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> by keeping a certain safety distance between the protective device and the nearest <\/span><span class=\"s2\">danger<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> point. This safety distance is calculated <\/span><span class=\"s2\">based on<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> the machine stopping performance, the response time of the protective device, the additional distance (penetration depth factor) <\/span><span class=\"s2\">and the assumed approach speed.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">The EN ISO 13855 and ANSI B11.19 as <\/span><span class=\"s2\">worldwide<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> valid standards define the formulas for <\/span><span class=\"s2\">the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">calculation of <\/span><span class=\"s2\">safety distance<\/span><span class=\"s2\">s<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The Principle of Stop Time Measurement<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p class=\"s4\">The stopping time is a key factor for machines with dangerous motions when selecting and positioning the protective device. The stopping time essentially determines the safety distance between protective device and danger point. This guarantees that the operator cannot reach the nearest danger point before the standstill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"s4\">The time measure meter safetyman<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u00a0DT3 is used to determine the stopping time and stopping distance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/hhb_robot_sequenz_24fps_20c.gif\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>The Actuator<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>\u2026 triggers a machine stop at a pre-adjusted position (usually at the highest velocity) simulating the response of the protective device. The Relay Unit or the Auto-Hand can be used as actuators. The relay output is usually connected between the output of the protective device and the machine control. The Auto-Hand triggers the protective device directly. Thus, an electrical connection to the machine control is no longer necessary. The sensor for linear motions is generally a cable transducer and for rotating motions a wheel encoder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/seilgeber_alle_klein.png\" alt=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>The Measuring Device<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>\u2026 determines \u2013 via the sensor\u2019s information \u2013 the stopping time and the stopping distance of the machine between the stopping signal and the machine\u2019s standstill. The safety distance between the protective device and the danger point is calculated. All data of the protective device is taken into account and the valid European standards are considered. Multiple automatic measurements with statistical evaluation increase the precision.
